We are delighted to share that our PhD researcher Kamila Krych (NTNU) received official recognition at the recent conference of the industrial ecology community, organized by the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE).
During the conference’s closing ceremony, the Journal of Industrial Ecology presented its annual awards for the best papers published in 2025, including the Junior Author Prize. While the prize itself was awarded to another researcher, the selection process was highly competitive, and the committee officially recognized two additional outstanding papers—one of which was Kamila’s article on the “nature and nurture” framework, developed during her PhD. This framework highlights how both product “nature” (inherent product durability) and “nurture” (external factors) affect product lifetime, and introduce a model for accounting for the “nurture” based strategies such as repair or reuse in dynamic material flow analysis (dMFA), including three dimensions of lifetime: age, period (time), and cohort.
This recognition highlights the scientific quality and impact of the work, which has attracted considerable interest within the industrial ecology community. Conference participants approached the author to discuss the paper and its contributions, demonstrating its relevance and influence in the field. Kamila is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zürich, focusing on product lifespans of buildings.
The achievement also reflects the interdisciplinary spirit of the LASTING project. By bringing together expertise from different disciplines, the project has created an environment where new perspectives can flourish. The recognized research integrates consumer perspectives into industrial ecology, illustrating how interdisciplinary collaboration can lead to innovative frameworks and impactful research.
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition! We are proud to see research developed within the LASTING consortium receiving international acknowledgment.
